About
Ballethnic Dance Company, founded on January 15, 1990 by Nena Gilreath and Waverly T. Lucas II, is the second Black-founded professional ballet company in the United States and the first founded by a Black female. The company uniquely blends classical ballet with African dance concepts, and its Urban Nutcracker has become a cherished Atlanta tradition. The street where the company is located was renamed in its honor, and Ballethnic has been recognized as a Southern Cultural Treasure.
