About
Dance Theatre of Harlem was co-founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell - the first Black principal dancer at NYCB - and Karel Shook, with the mission of proving that dancers of any background can perform classical ballet at the highest level. Rooted in the Balanchine tradition, DTH has earned international acclaim and was inducted into the National Museum of Dance Hall of Fame. Its Dancing Through Barriers® outreach program brings ballet into public schools across the country.
